Tony disappears.
The weekend after Tony had left our place he sent me a text message saying he needed to come by in the next "day or two" to pick up some "important document" he needed for something. I wasn't really sure what he did or did not have at our place. I know that he had very limited possessions in general. He seems to have had things stolen constantly, and people whom he stays with ultimately lock him out and keep his property. I have read and heard of many stories of problems with theft for those on the streets. While I could see some 'one' being vindictive enough to hold or discard his property I can't imagine why people would want his things. Canned tuna? Ragged jeans and tee shirts? Is there some gratification in throwing away another's belongings that I don't appreciate?
He was at the library in Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) and he would only have access to the internet until 1 pm. He would then have "spotty" access and let me know when he might be by. I said we would try to be around. We didn't hear from him again over the next 5 days. Finally, wondering what was up, I sent a text to him while in line at Ralph's (a local grocery store) one evening that said something to the effect of "Hey you crackhead whore are you ever coming to get this important piece of paperwork you needed?" Admittedly abrasive, fair but offensive all the same, and certainly anything but subtle. I've lived in California most of my adult life, but deep down I am an outwardly opinionated Jersey boy. He did not take the comment well, barking back that he knew my husband and I all along and I was a "huntsman." I am still not clear, nor do I really care what he meant by that statement, but certain it isn't really the case.
A little later that evening I replied to him, trying to defuse things, explaining that I am not trying to be overly judgmental or attacking, I am "just drawn that way." No reply. The next day I reached out again. Nothing. I left it with I would wait for him to respond. I likewise left a similar message on his profile on the website which we met on as I knew his phone number seemed to change with some frequency. I heard nothing for over 2 weeks with his things still at our house. We had nothing to lose, we were anything but trying to keep his possessions. Finally, he reached out to my husband and told him to apologize to me and he would be in touch in the next day or so. That took about another week.
